Stick to the plan, man

According to my Hal Higdon’s Marathon Training Plan, my Sunday long run this week was supposed to be a step back week with a shorter long run. It called for 12 km on Sunday after 11 km race pace on Saturday. But I couldn’t help myself. I ran a slower 21 km on Saturday and then 16.5 km on Sunday just so I could stay outside in the better than normal temperatures. I know I should be following the plan a little closer, but I am feeling great and I want to take advantage of the weather. Good thing I don’t have a coach or he would tell me to take it easy.

The race is a long time from now, so I need to be careful not to overdo it between now and then. My plan the last couple years was to get my long runs really long early in the training plan, and then to increase speed much nearer to the race. That plan worked great for me and got me to Boston. This plan this year seems to add speed work right off the bat, so it also doesn’t have as long long runs at the start. I am not sold on this plan yet, but I will give it a little longer to see if I get used to it. We’ll see on May 3rd if I got it right.

You can see below some of my beautiful training ground this weekend. It was a little icy but with a slow pace it worked out.

  1. Training plans are guidelines. Always a good idea to be cautious, but that plan wasn’t written with you in mind, but with somebody like you in mind. I never worry about straying a bit here and there.

  2. I was just thinking how there’s little time between now and May 30. Ugh! I like to get my long runs in ASAP in the winter because you never know what Mother Nature is going to drop. That’s why I always find training for spring races challenging!
