I’m Kevin and I’ve been running in Calgary since 2007. Roads, trails, hills, races, in groups and alone. In the city mostly, but I especially love mountain running. My family thinks I’m crazy (but I think it’s rubbing off on them too).

Discovering and running the trails of Calgary, the Canadian Rockies, and any other cool places I come across.
When the trail ends, keep going
I visited Canada and Calgary in 1994 and loved the Rockies. It must be amazing to run around there.

Hey Kevin, Awesome site, I’ll be coming back to read often – I spent a year in Banff and didn’t manage to run much then but now I’m a runner I’ve always wanted to go back and do some mountain running. Jealous of your location!

Great to hear you are a runner now. We do live in an amazing place for running, especially with the mountains

Kevin, thanks for the encouraging word on the article I wrote this evening. Hearing from folks keeps me plugging away at my walking-running and writing. Both require a bit of perseverance. My husband and I are working toward being able to run longer and longer stretches. So far, the distance we cover is very unimpressive. But we’ll get there.
Blessings to you~

Hi Marie,
The are several road races in Banff National park. The banff marathon/ 10k is June 19 and there is a relay in the Fall. Inside the park there are no official trail races, but there are lots of trails to run on. I wrote a couple blog posts about that. Just outside the park in Canmore / Kananaskis where the mountains are just as amazing, there are a ton of trail races. There’s one nearly every weekend through the summer from 10k to ultras. Check out Moose Mountain trail race, Ironlegs 50 Miler, Grizzly Ultra. If you are looking to just trail run to the top of any mountain, don’t try it before July because of the snow but there is a lot of good trails even before July. You can check out Calgary Trail Runners Meetup / Facebook group for an enthusiastic groups who just love the mountain trails and run together weekly. They love visitors. Oh, and about safety, it’s pretty safe. Trail runners here all carry bear spray and first aid kits on all our runs but I have never had to use it. I’ve seen lots of bears and moose on my runs but if you are in a group you shouldn’t have any worries.
Have a blast exploring the Rockies!
